코로나19로 식중독 발생 건수 '사상 최저'

The number of food poisoning cases in Korea dropped to a record low in 2020, due mainly to enhanced personal hygiene rules and the restricted operation of mass dining facilities spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.

식품의약품안전처에 따르면 2020년 국내 식중독 발생 건수는 코로나19 대유행으로 촉발된 집단급식소 운영 제한과 개인위생수칙 강화로 인해 사상 최저치로 떨어졌다.

The ministry released a report on the country's food poisoning cases from last year. A total of 178 cases were reported nationwide, down 52 percent from the previous five-year average of 343.

식약처는 작년부터 한국의 식중독에 관한 보고서를 발표했다. 전국적으로 총 178건이 보고되었는데, 이는 이전의 5년 평균인 343건의 52% 수준이다.

The number of food poisoned patients marked 53 per 1 million people, down 40 percent from a yearly average of 133 patients per million, seen during the previous five years.

식중독 환자의 수는 100만명당 53명으로 지난 5년간 연평균인 100만명당 133명의 40%가 수준이다.

The numbers of both cases and patients marked the lowest the government has ever seen during the entire time that it has been collecting relevant data, since 2002, the Ministry noted.

발생 건수와 환자 수 모두 정부가 관련 자료 수집을 시작한 2002년 이후로 가장 낮은 수치를 기록했다고 식약처는 설명했다.

The Ministry viewed that the dramatic decline was attributable to COVID-19-induced measures, including strengthened personal hygiene rules and the closure of mass eating facilities, such as cafeterias in schools and offices.

식약처는 급격한 감소가 개인위생수칙 강화와 학교나 기업 내 구내식당 등 집단급식시설 폐쇄와 같은 코로나19 방역 조치 때문이라고 여겼다.

The limited operation of eateries and the cancellation of local festivals played significant roles in preventing food poisoning as well, it said.

식당의 영업시간 제한과 지역 축제의 취소도 식중독 예방에 중요한 역할을 했다고 밝혔다.

Among the food poisoning cases in different facilities, the biggest number was seen in eateries with 103 cases, but that figure was less than half of the previous five-year annual average of 210. There were 16 cases reported involving school cafeterias, a big decrease from the former yearly average of 34.

시설별로는 식중독 발생 건수가 외식업에서 103건으로 가장 많았지만, 이는 이전의 5년 연평균 210건의 절반에도 못 미치는 수치다. 학교 급식과 관련된 식중독 발생은 16건으로, 이전의 연평균 34건보다 크게 줄었다.

"The initial COVID-19 outbreak made people wash their hands frequently and practice good personal hygiene rules, leading to a notable decrease in the number of food poisoning cases, especially from March to May," the Ministry said in a statement.

"코로나19 발생으로 사람들이 손을 자주 씻고 개인위생관리를 실천하게 되자, 3월부터 5월까지 식중독 발생 건수가 눈에 띄게 감소했다"고 식약처는 밝혔다.
