4th virus wave feared as Korea sees 3 variants

변이 바이러스 3종 나왔다… '4차 대유행 우려'

Concerns are growing here over a possible fourth wave of COVID-19 infections after the health authorities said they were seeing a consistent increase in the number of people infected with new variants of the coronavirus, which are known to be more transmissible.

보건당국이 전염성이 더 높은 것으로 알려진 코로나19 신종 변이 바이러스 확진자의 수가 지속적인 증가를 보이고 있다고 발표한 이후로 4차 대유행 가능성에 대한 우려가 커지고 있다.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said Wednesday that it had confirmed 39 cases of extra-contagious variants of COVID-19 since last October.

질병관리청은 전염력이 더 강한 코로나19 변이 바이러스 확진자가 지난해 10월부터 지금까지 총 39명이 발생했다고 수요일 밝혔다.

Of the 39, 27 were from the United Kingdom, followed by seven from South Africa and five from Brazil.

39명 중 27명은 영국 출신이었고 7명은 남아프리카 출신, 5명은 브라질 출신이었다.

Adding to concerns is that five patients were infected with the new variants in Korea, unlike the others who arrived from abroad.

더욱 우려되는 점은 해외에서 입국한 확진자들과 달리 5명은 국내에서 변이바이러스에 감염되었다는 사실이다.

"The five cases show the increasing possibility of the spread of the new variants within local communities," a KDCA official said. "We will expand new variant testing to those who have not traveled overseas."

질병관리청 관계자는 "이 5건은 지역사회에서 신종 변이 바이러스가 확산될 가능성이 높아지고 있음을 보여준다"며 "해외 여행을 하지 않은 사람들까지 변이 바이러스 검사를 확대할 것"이라고 말했다.

The recent emergence of several COVID-19 mutations has been putting health authorities and experts around the world on alert as they are more transmissible than the original strain.

변이 바이러스가 기존보다 더 전염성이 강하기에, 최근 여러 변이 바이러스의 출현은 전 세계 보건당국과 전문가들을 비상 상황에 빠뜨렸다.

Korea is one of nine countries where all three variants of the coronavirus have been found, the KDCA said, noting that it is remaining vigilant over the possibility that they could cause a fourth wave of infections.

질병관리청은 "한국은 코로나 변이 3종이 모두 발견된 9개국 중 하나"라며 "4차 대유행을 놓고 경계를 늦추지 않고 있다"고 밝혔다.
