코로나19 대유행, 백신 공급으로 사라질까?

With mass vaccinations beginning around the world, people are wondering if the end of the prolonged pandemic is in sight.

전 세계적으로 대규모 백신 접종이 시작되면서 사람들은 장기화된 코로나바이러스의 종말이 가시화되고 있는지를 궁금해하고 있다.

Likewise, many Koreans are pinning high hopes on the government's series of vaccine rollout plans but experts expect it will take quite a while for vaccinations to bring the coronavirus completely under control.

마찬가지로, 많은 한국인들이 정부의 백신 공급 계획에 큰 기대를 걸고 있지만, 전문가들은 코로나바이러스가 완전히 통제되기까지는 상당한 시간이 걸릴 것으로 예상하고 있다.

Moderna, the U.S. biotech company, confirmed Thursday that it signed a deal with the Korean government to provide 40 million doses of its vaccine.

미국의 생명공학 기업인 모더나는 목요일 한국 정부와 백신 4,000만 회 접종분을 공급하는 계약을 체결했다고 발표했다.

"It is highly likely that the pandemic will continue into the second half," said Choi Won-seok, a professor of the division of infectious diseases at Korea University.

"팬데믹은 하반기까지 계속될 가능성이 크다"고 최원석 고려대 감염내과 교수는 말했다.

"I don't think the pandemic will end overnight as the virus is too contagious and is well adapted to human hosts. In addition, animals such as pets and minks are easily infected, so the virus outbreak is likely to repeat. But the vaccine rollout will restore normal daily life by reducing the fatality rate."

이어 "코로나19 바이러스는 전염력이 너무 높고, 사람이라는 숙주에 적응이 잘되어 있어 팬데믹이 금방 끝나지 않을 것이라 본다. 또 반려동물, 밍크 등 동물에도 감염이 잘된다. 따라서 유행이 반복되거나 다시 나타날 가능성이 크다. 하지만 백신 공급은 치명률을 줄여 일상생활이 가능하게 하지 않을까 생각한다"고 덧붙였다.

Even if vaccinations begin, the government and experts agree that the number of daily new cases would not be reduced immediately as it usually takes more than half a year for mass immunization after vaccinating.

백신 접종이 시작되더라도 접종 후 집단면역까지 통상 반년 이상 걸리는 만큼 일일 신규 확진자 수가 당장 줄어들지는 않을 것이라는 게 정부와 전문가들의 공통된 견해다.
