트럼프 "WHO 지원금 영구 중단 고려"

U.S President Donald Trump threatened on Monday to permanently halt funding for the World Health Organization (WHO) if it did not commit to improvements within 30 days, and to reconsider his country's membership of the agency.

도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령은 월요일 세계보건기구(WHO)가 30일 이내에 개선하려 하지 않는다면 자금 지원을 영구적으로 중단하고, 회원국 탈퇴를 고려하겠다고 경고했다.

Trump suspended U.S. contributions to the WHO last month, accusing it of promoting Chinese “disinformation” about the novel coronavirus outbreak, although WHO officials denied the accusation.

트럼프 대통령은 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증 발병에 대한 중국의 ‘정보 은폐’를 WHO가 조장했다고 비난하며 자금 지원을 지난달 중단했고, WHO 관계자들은 이러한 비난에 반박했다.

“If the WHO does not commit to major substantive improvements within the next 30 days, I will make my temporary freeze of United States funding to the WHO permanent and reconsider our membership,” Trump told its chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in a letter posted on Twitter.

트럼프 대통령은 “만약 WHO가 30일 이내에 실질적인 개선 노력을 하지 않는다면, WHO에 대한 미국의 자금 지원을 일시 중단에서 영구 중단으로 전환하고 회원국 탈퇴도 재고할 것”이라고 테드로스 아드하놈 게브레예수스 WHO 사무총장에 보낸 서한을 트위터에 올렸다.

Earlier, Trump said the Geneva-based WHO had “done a very sad job” in its handling of the coronavirus, which emerged in China late last year, and he would make a decision on funding soon.

앞서 트럼프 대통령은 제네바에 본부를 둔 WHO가 지난해 말 중국에서 발생한 코로나바이러스 대응 과정이 “매우 애석했다”면서 조만간 자금 지원 결정을 내릴 것이라고 밝혔다.

Trump said in the letter the only way forward for WHO was for it to demonstrate independence from China, adding that his administration had started discussing reform with Tedros.

트럼프 대통령은 앞서 보낸 서한에서 “중국으로부터 독립된 기구임을 증명하는 것이 WHO가 앞으로 나아갈 유일한 방법”이라고 말하며 그의 행정부가 테드로스 사무총장과 WHO 개혁에 대해 논의하기 시작했다고 덧붙였다.

Trump also made various accusations against China in the letter including that it tried to block evidence the virus could be transmitted between people, pressed the WHO not to declare it an emergency, refused to share data and sample and denied access to its scientists and facilities.

또한, 트럼프 대통령은 중국이 코로나바이러스가 사람 사이에 전염될 수 있다는 증거를 차단하려 했고, 비상사태를 선포하지 않도록 WHO에 압력을 가했으며, 데이터 및 샘플 공유 거부뿐 아니라 연구진과 시설에 대한 접근도 거부했다며 서한을 통해 다양하게 비난했다.

China hit back on Tuesday with its foreign ministry spokesman, Zhao Lijian, saying the letter was slanderous.

중국은 화요일 자오리젠 외교부 대변인을 통해 트럼프 대통령의 서한이 중상모략이라고 반박했다.

Zhao said the U.S. decision to stop contributing to the WHO was a violation of its international obligations. (Reuters)
