Emirates plans to cut about 30,000 jobs amid virus outbreak

에미레이트항공, 임직원 3만명 감원한다

Emirates Group is planning to cut about 30,000 jobs to reduce costs amid the coronavirus crisis, which will bring down its number of employees by about 30 percent from more than 105,000 at the end of March, Bloomberg News reported on Sunday.

에미레이트 그룹은 코로나바이러스 사태 속에 비용 절감을 위해 3월말 기준 10만5천명이 넘는 전체 임직원의 30%에 달하는 3만명을 줄일 계획이라고 블룸버그통신이 일요일 보도했다.

The company is also considering speeding up the planned retirement of its A380 fleet.

동사는 또한 초대형 여객기인 A380 기단의 예정된 퇴역 시기를 앞당기는 것을 고려하고 있다.

An Emirates spokeswoman said that no public announcement has been made yet by the company regarding "redundancies at the airline", but that the company is conducting a review of "costs and resourcing against business projections."

에미레이트항공의 대변인은 '항공사의 정리해고'에 대한 공식 발표는 아직 없지만, 사측은 "사업 예측에 불리한 비용 및 자원"에 대한 검토를 진행하고 있다고 말했다.

Emirates, one of the world's biggest long-haul airlines, said earlier this month that it will raise debt to help itself through the coronavirus pandemic, and may have to take tougher measures as it faces the most difficult months in its history.

세계 최대 장거리 항공사 중 하나인 에미레이트항공은 이달 초 "코로나바이러스 대유행을 헤쳐나가기 위해 부채를 늘릴 것"이라며 "역사상 가장 어려운 몇 달을 맞아 더욱 강력한 조치를 취해야 할 것"이라고 말했다.

The state-owned airline, which suspended regular passenger flights in March due to the virus outbreak that has shattered global travel demand, had said that a recovery in travel was at least 18 months away.

전 세계적인 여행 수요를 산산이 조각낸 바이러스 발생으로 3월에 모든 여객 운항을 중단한 이 국영 항공사는 여행 수요 회복까지 적어도 18개월은 더 걸릴 것이라고 말했다.

It reported a 21% rise in profit for its financial year ending March 31, but said the pandemic had hit its fourth-quarter performance.

에미레이트항공은 3월 31일에 끝나는 직전 회계연도에 순이익이 21% 증가했다고 발표했지만, 코로나바이러스 대유행이 4분기 실적에 영향을 끼쳤다고 밝혔다.
