BTS celebrates New Year's Eve with Times Square performance

방탄소년단, 타임스퀘어에서 새해맞이 공연 선보여

K-pop sensation BTS were the second South Korean pop artists to perform live in New York City's Times Square on New Year's eve, in a spectacle packed with crowds set for a countdown to the new year. 

K팝 센세이션을 일으키고 있는 방탄소년단이 새해 전날 미국 뉴욕 타임스퀘어에서 생방송 공연을 펼친 두 번째 한국인 가수에 등극했다. 

The seven-member boy band showed up on the stage in the heart of Manhattan just before midnight on Tuesday (New York time), giving an eight-minute performance of two of their best hits: "Make It Right" and "Boy with Luv." 

7인조 그룹 방탄소년단은 새해 전야인 화요일 자정(현지시각) 직전 나타나 두 개의 히트곡 ‘메이크 잇 라잇’과 ‘작은 것들을 위한 시’를 부르며 8분가량의 공연을 선보였다.  

When their part ended, the group shouted to the crowd, "Happy New Year!" 

방탄소년단의 무대가 끝나자 멤버들은 관중을 향해 “해피 뉴 이어”를 외쳤다. 

A throng of people cheered and mouthed the lyrics in Korean, with some of them waving "army bombs," the official light sticks used by BTS fans. 

수많은 사람들이 방탄소년단 팬들이 사용하는 공식 응원봉인 ‘아미밤’을 흔들며 환호했고, 한국어 가사를 따라불렀다. 

BTS appeared in one of the New Year's Eve shows in Hollywood in 2017, which was pre-recorded.

방탄소년단은 2017년 할리우드에서 열린 새해맞이 행사에 출연했는데, 이는 사전 녹화된 쇼였다. 

It was their first time performing in Times Square and made them the second Korean artists to do so after Psy, best known for the first YouTube video to reach 1 billion views for his single "Gangnam Style," who was invited to the festivities in 2012. 

방탄소년단에게 이번 타임스퀘어 새해맞이 공연은 처음이며, 한국 가수로서는 두 번째다. 2012년 ‘강남스타일’로 유튜브 영상 조회수 10억뷰를 기록한 싸이가 같은 행사에 초대되어 같은 장소에서 공연한 바 있다. 

New York police estimated that at least 1.5 million people gathered in Times Square to watch the show, with security tightened using unmanned drones and police choppers flying over the area to ensure citizens' safety. (Yonhap) 

시민들의 안전을 위해 드론과 경찰 헬기가 동원되며 삼엄해진 경비 속에 뉴욕 경찰 측은 타임스퀘어에 최소 150만 명이 모여 공연을 관람한 것으로 추산했다.
