Typhoon Lingling likely to hit Korea over weekend

태풍 ‘링링’ 주말에 한반도 강타

 

Central and local governments raised their alert status Tuesday after the state-run weather agency reported that Typhoon Lingling was gaining strength as it approached the Korean Peninsula.

태풍 ‘링링’이 세력이 강해지며 한반도로 접근하고 있다는 기상청의 화요일 보도 이후 정부와 각 지자체들이 대비 태세를 강화하고 있다. 

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), this year's 13th typhoon was moving north-northwest at a speed of 9 kilometers per hour from an area about 650 kilometers southeast of Taiwan.

기상청에 따르면 제13호 태풍 ‘링링’은 대만 남동쪽 약 650㎞ 해상에서 시속 9㎞로 북북서 방향으로 이동 중이다. 

The storm, which was formed east of the Philippines, started as a small typhoon with a central pressure of 994 hectopascals and a maximum wind speed of 21 meters per second near its center.

필리핀 동쪽에서 형성된 이 태풍은 중심기압이 994hPa(헥토파스칼), 중심부근의 최대 풍속은 초속 21m인 작은 태풍으로 시작되었다.  

However, the KMA forecast the typhoon to grow stronger and faster as it travels north toward the peninsula, and its maximum wind speed will record 37 meters per second.

하지만 기상청은 태풍이 한반도를 향해 북상하면서 점점 더 강해지고 빨라지며, 최대 풍속은 초속 37m를 기록할 것으로 전망했다.  

The typhoon is expected to arrive in waters 310 kilometers southwest of Jeju Island at 9 a.m. Friday and move north to approach seas 110 kilometers northwest of Gunsan in North Jeolla Province at 9 a.m. Saturday. It is forecast to enter North Korea at around 3 a.m. Sunday.

태풍은 금요일 오전 9시쯤 제주도 남서쪽 약 310㎞ 해상에 도착해, 토요일 오전 9시쯤 전북 군산에서 북서쪽 약 110㎞ 떨어진 해상으로 북상하며, 일요일 오전 3시쯤 북한으로 빠져나갈 것으로 기상청은 내다봤다.  

Typhoon Lingling will also bring heavy rain that will affect the whole peninsula over the weekend.  

많은 비를 동반하는 태풍 링링은 주말에 한반도 전역에 영향을 끼칠 것으로 보인다.  

"The typhoon is gaining strength while moving toward Taiwan, and is expected to approach Korea fast after Wednesday night," the weather agency said. 

기상청은 "태풍이 대만을 향해 이동하며 세지고 있으며, 수요일 밤 빠른 속도로 한국에 접근할 것으로 보인다"고 전했다. 

 Even before the typhoon arrives, the country started to experience rainfall in southern parts Monday.

 태풍이 오기 전인 월요일부터 남부지방에 비가 내리기 시작했다. 

 The KMA forecast a maximum of 300 millimeters of rain in central areas of the peninsula, including, Seoul. Torrential rainfall is expected Wednesday and Thursday mornings in the region.

기상청은 서울을 포함한 중부지방에 최대 300㎜의 비가 내릴 것으로 예측했다. 수요일과 목요일 아침에 폭우가 내릴 전망이다. 

Heavy rain advisories were issued for the south including Jinju in South Gyeongsang Province and Yeosu in South Jeolla Province, Tuesday, while heavy rain warnings were issued for other nearby areas.

화요일 경남 진주와 전남 여수 등 남부지방에 호우경보가, 그 밖의 인근 지역에는 호우주의보가 내려졌다. 

 Over 50 millimeters of rainfall per hour are expected on Jeju Island, Friday and Saturday, together with strong winds, the KMA said.

제주도에는 금요일과 토요일 시간당 50㎜ 이상의 비와 강한 바람이 불 것이라고 기상청은 전했다. 

 "Damage from flooding is anticipated as the typhoon will bring more rainfall over the weekend in addition to that from the rain front during the week," a KMA official said. "We advise thorough precautions against possible damage."

기상청 관계자는 "많은 비가 내리고 강한 바람이 불어 심각한 피해가 발생할 가능성이 크다"며 "사전에 철저한 대비가 필요하다"고 당부했다.
